"With You I'm Born Again" is a 1979 duet written by Ballad Connors and David Shire that originated on the soundtrack of the 1979 film Fast Break. It was performed past Motown recording artists Billy Preston and Syreeta Wright (credited every bit Syreeta) and became an international hit for the duo, reaching number four on the Billboard Hot 100[ii] and number two on the UK singles chart.[3]

History [edit]

The music from Fast Break was credited to David Shire and James DiPasquale, and Carol Connors put words to 4 of the songs on the soundtrack album. Connors recalls, "I had written most of the lyrics to 'With You I'1000 Born Over again' in 22 minutes, just I couldn't notice ii words and it was driving me crazy."[four] The correct words came to her on her mode to an ice foam parlor, where she requested a pencil and paper forth with her order. "I had finally found it—the line I was seeking--'Come up show me your kindness, in your arms I know I'll find this'—and I wanted to get it down on paper."[four]

Motown executive Suzanne de Passe chose Wright as Preston'southward partner for the two duets that had been written for the film,[5] and each vocalist also had a solo number to cutting for the soundtrack album as well. Connors recalled, "Baton and Syreeta were originally not very fond of the idea of recording together—they each wanted to practice their ain matter, but this worked out extremely well for both of them."[4] The reluctant pair were surprised by the success of "With You I'm Born Again". "Though both liked the vocal, they never dreamed of it beingness a hit single."[vi]

Connors noted the impression some were left with past the song and Preston. "When David Shire heard Billy Preston play the song on the organ, he said to me, 'Now I know why he'due south a star.'" Connors also shared, "The late great Marvin Hamlisch told me that he was in the barber chair when he first heard the song on the radio and stood straight up in anaesthesia, narrowly missing getting his throat cutting by the scissors. Truthful story."[4]

But radio airplay and record sales nearly never happened. The Fast Intermission soundtrack was released in early 1979, when disco even so permeated the airwaves, and the other of the duo's recordings from the album, the dance tune "Go for It", was chosen as the single that would be issued to promote the album. That selection barely made a dent in the charts, spending one week on the Disco singles chart at number 80 in Billboard mag[vii] and "bubbling under" the Billboard Hot 100 for one week at number 108.[2]

The film did not get much attending, either, and Preston described their next endeavor to give "With Yous I'm Born Once more" more than exposure, explaining that "after the flick didn't do very well, the [soundtrack] anthology didn't sell well. We pulled information technology off that album and put it on mine."[six] Preston'southward anthology, Tardily at Nighttime, came out after in 1979, but fifty-fifty with that reissue of the song, Preston insisted that "nosotros still didn't think of it as a single."[six] It did, however, begin to go airplay in the European market[half-dozen] and was finally released as a unmarried at the end of the year.

Some other hurdle the song had to overcome was the fact that its title did not click with some record buyers. "Connors says her but regret well-nigh 'With You lot I'grand Born Again' is that she didn't championship information technology 'Come Bring Me Your Softness'. 'Drupe Gordy chosen me to permit me know we had a monster hit on our hands but that early many people were going into record stores asking for "Come Bring Me Your Softness", and some record sales were lost as a consequence.'"[4] The fact that the phrase "born again" is often associated with Christianity may take also been confusing, and Connors admitted, "Many thought the song had religious overtones, but Robert Culp and I were lovers at the time, and that'south the fashion we felt almost one another. Culp was the inspiration."[iv] The singers as well felt the vocal could be interpreted in a religious context too equally being a romantic dear song. Preston explained, "When we saw Fast Pause, we understood it was a romantic song. Merely I retrieve of it as religious considering God is honey, and so it all inter-relates."[6] This religious attribute would later be played up by the show Glee in the flavour two episode "Duets", when the characters Finn Hudson (played by Cory Monteith) and Rachel Drupe (played by Lea Michele) perform a shortened version of the song dressed every bit a priest and a Catholic schoolgirl respectively.

Chart success [edit]

"With You I'm Born Once again" debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 in the issue of the magazine dated December 8, 1979, and peaked at number four over the course of 29 weeks.[ii] The following week marked its first appearance on the Great britain singles chart[8] and on Billboard's list of the fifty about pop Adult Contemporary songs in the U.S., and both nautical chart runs resulted in a number 2 showing.[9] [3] Information technology also started three weeks on the magazine'southward Hot Soul Singles chart in the January 19, 1980, outcome and got equally high every bit number 86.[ten] It was Preston'southward biggest hit in five years and the biggest popular striking of Wright's career.
